Ed X - Is This Anything?

Meet Ed X

Overview

Ed X is a mechanic of Guilder heritage, currently serving aboard a bounty-hunting vessel alongside crewmates Jaku (the pilot), Q (the muscle), and Corsica (the scoundrel). Ed uses they, he, and she interchangeably and presents with an intentionally ambiguous gender identity. Ed changed their surname to sever association with their father, Kenn.

Origins

Born into a household of inconsistent, drug-funded wealth, Ed is the child of Kenn, a drug-runner, and a mother who died in childbirth and about whom Kenn never spoke. Ed carries an unfounded but persistent guilt that Ed is somehow responsible for Kenn’s abusive behavior. At age 12, Ed ran away from home and lived briefly as a homeless runaway before being taken on as an apprentice mechanic by a guild instructor named Nisa at age 13. [ED’S ORIGIN REGION?]

Guild Apprenticeship and the Founding Incident

Ed completed a six-year apprenticeship under Nisa, finishing at age 19 and standing on the threshold of formal promotion to full guild mechanic. Before that promotion could occur, the ship Ed had been living and working aboard, then named Cerberus, was sold. Ed had been asleep in the vessel at the time of sale and was unknown to the purchasing crew until surfacing after departure. This event, the founding incident, ended Ed’s guild track and began their life aboard ship as a fixture of the vessel itself rather than of any one crew.

Crew History

Ed has remained continuously attached to the ship through four successive crews, each of which acquired Ed as an included asset of the vessel rather than through independent recruitment.

First Crew. A skeleton crew operating with the bare minimum roster required to run the ship. They retained Ed, unwilling to dismiss a skilled mechanic who came as an unplanned bonus.

Second Crew. A larger crew with one member of each major shipboard role, including a second mechanic who struggled to perform. Ed filled the operational gaps that crewmate could not cover.

Third Crew. A small but not minimal crew, previously an established working unit for years prior to acquiring the ship, which they purchased specifically for a single high-stakes job. Within roughly a week of the purchase, and of Ed joining them, they executed that job. Ed, still new to the group, was assigned to remain shipside as engine operator, exterior lookout, and communications handler while the rest of the crew infiltrated the target. An unaccounted-for witness at the site led to the death of a crew member, witnessed visually by the rest of the crew and heard over comms by Ed. [DETAILS OF INCIDENT?] The crew, who had accepted but not fully befriended Ed at that point, spent days in stunned near-silence afterward before one member proposed selling the ship and taking time off. Ed was nominally consulted but the crew assumed correctly that Ed would remain with the vessel regardless of the outcome.

Fourth Crew (current). After passing through multiple resellers who passed over the aging, heavily patched vessel, the current crew purchased it cheaply, unaware Ed came with it. Ed emerged from the engine compartment during the sale, prompting the salesman’s remark that “the mechanic comes with.” The crew, who had been planning to rely on pilot Jaku for mechanical needs despite known shortcomings in that plan, welcomed the addition. Ed and this crew have since built a working relationship defined by competence and implicit trust through numerous completed jobs.

Skills and Methods

Ed’s guild training shows in proficiency with Hack, Rig, and Study, with lesser but present skill in Skulk and Consort. Ed has no notable training in remaining disciplines. Every substantial repair Ed performs is signed with a personal mark: a large X with a small E in the left quadrant and a small D in the right. Ed maintains an evolving mechanical drone project, currently a simple flying unit with a single rigid arm capable of pushing a button, with plans for future complexity.

Personality and Habits

Ed is bubbly, prone to speaking before thinking, and given to talking to themselves and naming inanimate objects. During anybody else’s comm call, Ed attempts to greet the person on the other end and frequently signs off calls with an involuntary “love you” before disconnecting. Physically, Ed is lanky, with a messy red-brown afro, ginger coloring, freckles, and a near-constant hoodie. Ed’s vice is luxury, indulged occasionally despite an otherwise unrefined lifestyle.

Relationships

Reputation

Perception of Ed varies by an observer’s tolerance for whimsy, ranging from annoyance to delight, with some regarding Ed as childlike and others as merely odd. The guild has had no contact with Ed since the founding incident but regards the disappearance with fondness, consistent with the guild’s broader appreciation of Ed as a departure from the typical seriousness of apprentices.

Development

Ed’s vices, habits, and behavior have shown no significant change across all four crews, consistent with a pattern of arrested development. The subject of Ed’s unclaimed guild promotion has never arisen; if it were, Ed is expected to dismiss it fatalistically as “if it was supposed to happen, it would have happened”.

Current Status and Aspirations

Ed considers the ship theirs regardless of nominal ownership, and still privately refers to it by its original name, Cerberus, despite renaming by every subsequent crew. Ed is currently preoccupied with a slow, undetectable pressure leak somewhere aboard the ship that no one else can perceive and that has resisted exhaustive search; awareness of the leak produces escalating obsession and anxiety in Ed when pressure drops. Beyond bounty hunting, Ed aspires to become a positive adult role model and to someday own a ship outright, ideally one built from scratch, even a small four-seater. Bounty hunting currently serves Ed as a means of on-the-job learning, networking with those tolerant of their oddities, and gathering parts and parts-location intelligence toward that future ship.
